Today we wake up to the next phase in AI, that is if you buy the “DeepSeek changes everything” narrative.

I would argue an alternative description makes more sense. Admittedly, for years the industry focus was on training—building ever-larger models in massive hyperscaler environments, pushing the limits of compute power, and refining architectures. Indeed, I wrote about the inevitable AI infrastructure crisis last year.

The conversation around AI has been dominated by models—who builds them, how powerful they are, and how they compare. But enterprise leaders aren’t looking for yet another model. They need AI that works—at scale, in production, and with measurable business impact.

DeepSeek AI R1 is a technical achievement, but it doesn’t change the fundamental reality: a better engine doesn’t build the car.
